Registration after arrival

Any professional or private host who lodges a foreigner, on any basis, must declare it to the police station, the national gendarmerie brigade or, failing that, the municipality where the property is, within 24 hours. A host who fails to make this declaration is fined 5,000 to 20,000 dinars.

Overstay penalties

90 days

A foreigner must leave Algeria when the visa or the legal permitted stay expires; the maximum stay per entry is 90 days. Unless the situation is regularised, a foreigner staying irregularly may be escorted to the border by order of the wali. The UK government says that an overstayer is likely to be detained by immigration police at the airport on departure and may face criminal prosecution and up to 3 months in prison.

Customs allowances

5,000 euros

The UK FCDO says to declare cash at your point of entry and exit if you carry more than 5,000 euros or the equivalent in other currencies, and that failing to declare, or declaring falsely, is an offence that may lead to criminal prosecution. It says only travellers with residency status may bring in and take out Algerian banknotes, up to a maximum of 10,000 dinars.
