What does landlocked mean?
A landlocked country has no coastline on the open ocean — its territory is entirely enclosed by other countries. Countries on the Caspian Sea, such as Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, are counted as landlocked because the Caspian is an inland body of water.
Where are the landlocked countries?
Europe has the most landlocked countries (17), followed by Africa (16), Asia (10) and Americas (2). South America has two — Bolivia and Paraguay — and North America and Oceania have none.
Doubly landlocked countries
Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan are doubly landlocked: to reach the sea you must cross at least two borders. Liechtenstein sits between Switzerland and Austria; Uzbekistan is surrounded by five landlocked Central Asian countries.
Why it matters
Without ports, landlocked countries depend on their neighbours for trade routes, which raises transport costs. Many have negotiated access to ports abroad — and for travellers, they are often reached overland or by air only.
