How countries border each other

There are 322 land borders between the world's countries and territories. On average a country has 2.7 neighbours, but the spread is huge: China and Russia each touch 14 countries, while 75 countries and territories — mostly islands — have no land border at all.

The longest border in the world runs between Canada and United States (8,891 km), much of it along the 49th parallel and around Alaska. Some of the shortest borders are only a few hundred metres long, such as the one between Spain and Gibraltar.

Why neighbours matter for travellers

Neighbouring countries are often the easiest trips: short distances, overland connections and, in many regions, open borders. Each country page shows the visa rules for crossing into every neighbour, the length of each border and a map of the surrounding region — plus the neighbours of the neighbours for longer overland routes.

Landlocked and island countries

45 countries have no coastline and depend on their neighbours for access to the sea. Two of them, Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan, are doubly landlocked: every neighbour is landlocked too. At the other extreme, island nations such as Japan, Iceland and New Zealand share no land border with anyone.
