Passport power around the world
The strongest and weakest passport on every continent, with the continent's average visa-free score.
What makes a passport strong?
A passport is more than an identity document — it decides how freely you can move around the world. The Singapore passport currently tops our ranking with visa-free access to 130 destinations, while the Afghanistan passport opens only 4. That gap of 126 countries is the difference between booking a flight on a whim and spending weeks on visa applications, embassy appointments and fees.
Passport strength reflects a country's diplomatic relationships: reciprocal visa-waiver agreements, membership of blocs with free movement such as the European Union and the Schengen Area, economic stability, low overstay rates and trust in the security of its travel documents. Countries that sign many bilateral agreements — and honour them — climb the ranking quickly.
How the ranking is calculated
Every passport is checked against 199 destinations. It scores one point for each country it can enter without a visa — either with no time limit (for example within the EU) or for a fixed visa-free stay such as 30, 90 or 180 days. Passports with the same score share a rank, which is why several countries can hold the same position.
Visa on arrival and electronic travel authorisations (eTA) are not counted in the score, because they still involve a fee or an application. They are shown in the mobility column — visa-free plus visa on arrival plus eTA — which describes how many countries you can reach without visiting an embassy. By that measure the United Arab Emirates passport leads with 170 destinations.
Regional differences
Europe has the strongest passports on average (106 visa-free destinations), while Africa has the weakest (32). Europe holds 8 of the ten strongest passports. Within every continent the spread is wide: in Africa scores range from 102 (Seychelles) down to 12 (Somalia).
Unlimited stays are concentrated in regions with free-movement agreements: the Germany passport has the most destinations with no fixed time limit (39).
Why it matters for travellers
A strong passport means cheaper, faster and more spontaneous travel: fewer visa fees, no waiting for approvals and easier business trips. For holders of weaker passports the ranking shows where visa-free trips are still possible — open any passport to see its full list of destinations and a map, or compare two passports to see exactly where they differ.
Entry rules change often, as countries add new visa waivers or introduce eTAs. Before you travel, check the exact rules for your trip on our visa requirements pages, which link to the official government source.
