Armenia's Internal Ministry has announced significant changes to residency requirements, effective November 1, 2026. This move comes as the country engages in visa liberalization talks with the European Union.

What Changes Are Being Made?

The residency application process will transition to a digital format, and state fees for obtaining residence status will increase. For temporary residency, the fee will rise from 105,000 AMD to 150,000 AMD, while the fee for permanent residency will increase from 140,000 AMD to 250,000 AMD. Additionally, a new fee of 30,000 AMD will be introduced for issuing certificates that confirm legal residency, and work visa applications will now incur a fee of 15,000 AMD.

Who Is Affected?

These changes are expected to impact various groups, including recent immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and India, who have sought residence in Armenia due to its relatively lenient policies. The new regulations will require applicants to demonstrate proof of financial means when applying for residency, which may complicate the process for some.

How to Apply

Starting in November, applicants will need to submit their residency applications digitally. Initially, new applicants will receive a one-year residency permit, after which they can apply for a five-year permit following three years of continuous residence. The introduction of new biometric identity documents, including passports and ID cards, is also part of this initiative, aimed at enhancing document security and facilitating border crossings.

As Armenia continues its path towards EU integration, these administrative changes reflect the country’s commitment to modernizing its immigration processes while preparing for potential visa-free access to the EU in the future.
