The Belarusian Passport Center in Vilnius has officially closed its physical office, but it will continue to issue New Belarus passports remotely. This decision comes as the center aims to optimize operations and reduce costs while maintaining its services for Belarusian citizens abroad.

Closure of the Vilnius Office

The closure of the office marks a significant change for the Belarusian Passport Center, which was established to provide an alternative identification document for Belarusians, especially political refugees. Although the center will not open new offices in Poland or elsewhere, it will still accept biometric data and process passport applications.

New Belarus Passport Project

The New Belarus passport was introduced as a response to the challenges faced by Belarusians after the abolition of new passport issuance at consulates abroad in 2023. The passport aims to serve as a means of identification for Belarusians living outside their home country and has been issued to around 600 individuals since its inception.

Remote Processing and Future Plans

The Belarusian Passport Center has transitioned to a decentralized system, allowing for the collection of biometric data in various European countries and the United States. Plans are underway to facilitate remote submissions for biometric data, making it easier for applicants to obtain their passports.

Challenges and Recognition Efforts

Despite the ongoing issuance of the New Belarus passport, recognition as a valid travel document remains a challenge. The center's representatives are actively pursuing avenues for international recognition, particularly outside the European Union, where there may be more favorable conditions for acceptance.

As the situation for Belarusians abroad continues to evolve, the Belarusian Passport Center remains committed to supporting its citizens through the New Belarus passport initiative, even in the face of operational reductions.
