Kazakhstan travelers get no new United options yet as airline studies routes
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says the carrier is studying possible flights to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and its network planning chief visited both countries this year. No routes, cities or launch dates have been announced.

United Airlines is looking at Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as possible future destinations, chief executive Scott Kirby said in a podcast appearance this week. The airline's head of network planning, Patrick Quayle, travelled to both countries this year to assess the opportunities, but Kirby said a major barrier remains: United cannot fly over Russia.
Key facts
- United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby raised Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as possible future destinations on the Cheeky Pint podcast.
- Network planning head Patrick Quayle visited both countries in 2026.
- Kirby said United "can't fly there today because we can't fly over Russia".
- No city, U.S. gateway, aircraft or launch date has been named.
- Uzbekistan Airways already flies between New York and Tashkent.
What has United Airlines said?
Speaking with John Collison and Ben Thompson on the Cheeky Pint podcast, Kirby described how United looks for destinations that other U.S. carriers have overlooked. He pointed to Quayle's trips to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan this year as an example of that work, saying the airline's network team is studying the possibilities in the region.
Kirby kept the idea open for the future, saying "this could work down the road." However, he named no specific city, U.S. departure airport, aircraft type or start date.
Why can't United fly there now?
The obstacle, according to Kirby, is Russian airspace. He said United cannot operate flights to the region today because it is unable to route aircraft over Russia. Uzbekistan Airways already serves New York from Tashkent, but that carrier does not face the same restrictions on flying over Russian territory that a U.S. airline would.
Are any new routes confirmed?
No. Nothing has been announced, and no tickets are on sale. Kirby's remarks were described as a look at United's thinking rather than a route announcement, and no timetable has been given for any decision.
What this means for travellers
There is currently no bookable United Airlines service to Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan to plan around, and travellers considering the region have no new dates or routes to watch yet. Anyone weighing a trip can keep an eye on United's own route announcements for any future service.
United's network team is continuing to study the region. Kirby said the concept could work at some point, but left the timing and any decision on whether to proceed unresolved.
