Latvia Maintains Current Visa Rules for Uzbek Citizens

Latvia has confirmed that it will not change its visa rules for citizens of Uzbekistan. This decision follows diplomatic discussions and concerns raised by the Uzbek Foreign Ministry regarding potential restrictions on visa issuance.

Background of the Decision

The Latvian Interior Minister, Janis Dombrova, had previously suggested temporarily restricting visas for Uzbek nationals, citing incidents involving offences committed shortly after their arrival in Latvia. However, this proposal was not included in the agenda of a recent Cabinet meeting, as coalition partners were not in agreement.

Current Visa Procedures

Despite initial discussions about limiting visa applications to specific categories of Uzbek citizens, such as family members of Latvian citizens and those with humanitarian needs, the Latvian government has decided to maintain the existing visa issuance procedures. The Uzbek Foreign Ministry engaged in diplomatic efforts to address these concerns, emphasizing the importance of their bilateral relations.

Advice for Uzbek Travellers

The Uzbek Foreign Ministry has urged its citizens to adhere to the laws and customs of the countries they visit, highlighting that individual offences can negatively impact the broader community of Uzbek nationals abroad. This advisory comes in light of recent legal actions taken against Uzbek citizens in Latvia for various offences.

In conclusion, Uzbekistan values its relationship with Latvia and aims to foster cooperation across various sectors, including migration. Travellers from Uzbekistan should remain informed about local laws and regulations while visiting Latvia.
