New direct flights to Sri Lanka reshape winter travel plans for 2026 season
Several airlines have launched or are launching direct flights to Colombo in 2026, including British Airways from London Gatwick on 23 October. Sri Lanka's December to March peak season is approaching, and the government has a new tourism plan for 2026 to 2031.

Travellers heading to Sri Lanka this winter have more direct flight options than before, with several European and Australian carriers adding or launching services to Colombo during 2026. The changes come as the island's main December to March tourist season approaches and as the government pushes a new strategy to spread visitor spending beyond established coastal resorts.

Which new routes are opening?
British Airways begins its first route to Sri Lanka on 23 October 2026, flying between London Gatwick and Colombo three times a week through the winter months. Jetstar Airways started direct flights between Melbourne and Colombo in August 2026, described as the first low cost link between Australia and Sri Lanka.
Air France, KLM and Lufthansa already operate services to Colombo from their respective hubs. Edelweiss Air flies seasonally from Zurich and LOT Polish Airlines from Warsaw during the winter period.
Where are visitors coming from?
Figures from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority show the United Kingdom is Sri Lanka's second largest source market, with 149,989 British arrivals between January and August 2026. India was the largest source with 385,483 arrivals, followed by the UK and then China with 100,828.
Total arrivals for the eight month period reached 1,535,122, including 191,704 during August.
What is the government planning?
Sri Lanka launched a World Bank supported National Tourism Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2031 on 31 August. The plan aims to raise visitor spending, encourage longer stays and distribute tourism earnings across all nine provinces rather than concentrating them in established resort areas.
Average earnings per visitor remain below the level recorded in 2018, despite arrivals in 2025 exceeding that year's total.
What this means for travellers
Travellers from the UK, Australia and mainland Europe have more direct or one-stop options to reach Colombo for the winter season. Ayesha Perera, co-founder of Tamarind Gardens Homestay in Digana, Kandy District, said direct routes change the shape of an itinerary rather than simply its cost, with travellers arriving without an overnight connection tending to move inland earlier and stay longer in one place.
Kandy District sits in the central highlands, roughly three hours from the international airport, and combines the cultural sites of the former royal capital with tea country, reservoirs and farmland. Accommodation in the area ranges from city hotels to smallholdings and farm stays.
British Airways flights to Colombo start on 23 October 2026, ahead of the peak December to March season.
