Uzbekistan is set to enhance its tourism sector with a new development plan focusing on nine caves and a salt mine, announced by the Tourism Committee on October 5, 2026. This initiative aims to attract more visitors and stimulate local economies through improved infrastructure and services.

Tourism Development Goals

The program outlines development efforts through 2028 in regions including Jizzakh, Samarkand, Surkhandarya, and Kashkadarya. Plans include establishing visitor routes and supporting local communities in creating family guesthouses. Additionally, local guides will receive specialized training to enhance their skills.

Key Sites Included

Among the highlighted locations is Boybuloq Cave in Surkhandarya, known for its challenging deep shafts and water-filled passages. Another significant site is Teshiktosh Cave, recognized for its archaeological importance due to the discovery of Neanderthal remains. The Khojaikon salt mine, featuring salt-coated galleries, will also be developed to include an observation deck with views of the surrounding mountains.

Implementation Timeline

The roadmap sets an April 2027 deadline for the approval of tourist routes, with the aim for the completed visitor infrastructure to be operational by January 2029. The Ministry of Emergency Situations has been tasked with drafting visit regulations and a certification system for guides by June 2027.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to leverage tourism, which contributed significantly to Uzbekistan's economy, accounting for 6% of the GDP in 2025. The government plans to hold annual forums starting in 2027 to attract private investment in the tourism sector.
