What the Romania visa rules mean for United States travellers

United States citizens can enter Romania without a visa and stay for up to 90 days. You only need a valid United States passport at the border; immigration officers may still ask for a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation and enough money for your stay. The 90-day limit usually counts calendar days from your arrival, so book your return flight inside that window.

Registration after arrival

3 days

A foreigner who entered Romania legally, and the person hosting them, must notify the territorial police within 3 days of entry or of the start of hosting. When staying in a hotel or other tourist accommodation, the foreigner completes the registration formalities with the establishment, which sends the data to the territorial police within 24 hours. The rule also refers to sending the foreigner's registration data to the General Inspectorate for Immigration through an IT application provided for this purpose. Failing to announce the stay is fined 400 to 800 lei.
