Visa & Entry Requirements for Argentina
Most travellers need a visa for Argentina: 108 of 198 passports must apply at an embassy or consulate, while 90 passports enter visa-free.
Argentina's National Directorate of Migrations publishes a visa-regime table showing, nationality by nationality, who needs a visa, and says tourists are admitted for up to three months, extendable for another similar period. Some nationals who need a tourist visa can instead apply for an electronic travel authorisation (AVE) if they hold a valid US visa in a listed category or — for nationals of countries exempt from US visas — a current ESTA or an entry into the US in the previous two years.

The payment receipt does not authorise entry into Argentina; only the AVE itself is accepted for entry. The AVE is for holders of valid ordinary passports travelling for tourism who hold a valid US visa in one of the listed categories, or, if their country's citizens do not need a US visa, a current ESTA or an entry into the United States within the last two years.
The UK Foreign Office says your passport must be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Argentina. Argentina's Foreign Ministry asks consular tourist-visa applicants for a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
WHO's list of countries requiring proof of yellow fever vaccination shows no such requirement for Argentina. Argentina's Ministry of Health lists Formosa, Misiones, Corrientes and parts of Jujuy, Salta and Chaco as areas with risk of yellow fever circulation, recommends vaccination for people travelling to areas with proven transmission, and says the vaccine must be given at least ten days before arrival.
Decree 366/2025 (29 May 2025) amended the Migration Law so that foreigners seeking admission must present a sworn declaration of the purpose of their entry and that they hold health insurance for their medical needs; the law says this declaration becomes enforceable once its implementation is regulated, and no official source we could read states that it is being enforced. In emergencies, access to health care cannot be refused to any foreigner; outside those cases, health establishments run by the national state provide routine treatment only on presentation of health insurance or prior payment. No official source we could read states a minimum cover.
Argentina's Foreign Ministry lists a round-trip ticket reservation among the documents required for a consular tourist visa application. No official Argentine source we could read states an onward-ticket requirement for other travellers; Canada's travel advice says customs officials may ask you to show a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.
Argentina's Foreign Ministry lists proof of economic solvency (for example recent pay slips, a credit card statement or a bank statement) among the documents required for a consular tourist visa application. No official source we could read states an amount. Canada's travel advice says customs officials may ask for proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.
A tourist is allowed a stay of up to 3 months, extendable for another similar period. Foreigners who have exceeded their authorised stay must pay an exit authorisation fee (Habilitación de Salida): 20 UMSM for nationals of MERCOSUR and associated states, 40 UMSM for others. The fee can no longer be paid at border crossings; the passenger is left with a debt and the transport company is fined. If the fee is not paid before leaving, a debt is generated, and the foreigner cannot re-enter Argentina until it is paid. Under Ley 25.871, a foreigner who stays after the authorised period is staying irregularly, and the National Migration Directorate may order them to regularise within a deadline it sets, under warning of expulsion.
Argentina's tax and customs agency (AFIP) says sums below USD 10,000 (or the equivalent in another currency) may be brought in and taken out; bringing in a larger amount requires a special declaration at customs on form OM 2249A, and taking out more than the permitted amount must be done by bank transfer. For travellers under 16 the limit is USD 5,000.
