Overstay penalties

40,000 FDJ

A foreigner who entered lawfully and stays beyond the period authorised by the visa pays a penalty of 40,000 FDJ for an overstay of up to 90 days, or 80,000 FDJ for more than 90 days, against issue of a supplementary stay authorisation. If the person cannot pay, the penalty is 3 to 6 months' imprisonment and a 5-year ban on entry and stay. Staying more than 6 months after the visa expires is punished by a fine of 50,000 to 500,000 FDJ; on a repeat offence the judge may also ban entry or stay for at least 3 years. The police may order the removal to the border of a foreigner who stayed beyond the visa's validity without a first residence permit. The French government's travel advice says the penalties are collected by the Immigration Police against a Public Treasury receipt.
