Overstay penalties

Article 42 of Law 02-03 punishes a foreigner who stays in Morocco beyond the period authorised by their visa, except in force majeure or with excuses accepted as valid, with a fine of 2,000 to 20,000 dirhams and imprisonment of one to six months, or one of the two. The penalty is doubled for a repeat offence, and the authorities may expel the foreigner. Article 21 allows a foreigner to be escorted to the border who stays beyond their visa or, if exempt from a visa, beyond three months from entry without a registration card.

Flag of MoroccoFrequently asked questions about Morocco visas

Do I need a visa for Morocco?

Most travellers need a visa for Morocco: 108 of 198 passports must apply at an embassy or consulate, while 76 passports enter visa-free. It depends on your passport — check yours.

Do US citizens need a visa for Morocco?

No. Morocco's Foreign Ministry lists the United States among the countries whose nationals are exempt from an entry visa, but does not state how long the stay may last, and no official source we could read does. The UK Foreign Office says border officials should stamp your passport on entry, and that some travellers without an entry stamp have had difficulties leaving Morocco.

How long can EU and UK citizens stay in Morocco?

UK citizens can stay visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism, according to the UK government; to stay longer they must request an extension at a Moroccan police station. EU citizens are also visa-exempt, but Morocco's Foreign Ministry list gives a stay length only for Hungary (90 days), and no other official source we could read states one.

Can I buy Moroccan dirhams before my trip?

The UK Foreign Office says the dirham is a closed, non-convertible currency that cannot easily be exchanged outside Morocco, and Moroccan Customs tolerates at most 2,000 MAD being carried in or out. The Government of Canada says unused dirhams can be converted at the airport exchange counter on departure with proof of your initial currency purchase.

Who needs Morocco's eVisa and where do you apply?

Many passports, including several Latin American ones (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru), are on the Foreign Ministry's list of nationalities exempt from an entry visa. The eVisa is open to citizens of a listed group of countries — including India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Jordan, Israel, Benin and Guatemala — and to other visa-required travellers who hold a valid multiple-entry non-electronic visa from the US, Schengen, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Japan, Norway or New Zealand. Apply at the official portal acces-maroc.ma; its eVisa page gives a processing time of 3 business days for the Standard track and 1 business day for Express.
