Australia Plans Major Cuts to Temporary Visas Amid Immigration Policy Shift
Australia's opposition leader Angus Taylor has announced significant reductions to temporary visas, aiming to cut 650,000 over four years as part of a new immigration policy.

Australia's opposition leader, Angus Taylor, recently unveiled a controversial immigration policy that proposes drastic cuts to temporary visas. This plan is described as the most significant reduction in migration in the country's history.
Details of the Policy Changes
The proposed immigration strategy aims to lower net overseas migration to 100,000 for the next two years. Following this period, the target would gradually increase to 130,000 in the third year and 160,000 in the fourth year. Taylor emphasized that this would result in a reduction of around 650,000 temporary visa holders, which constitutes more than one-third of the current total.
Impact on Visa Categories
The policy also includes a significant reduction in humanitarian visa places, slashing the cap from 20,000 to 10,000. Additionally, the number of bridging and temporary protection visas would be cut from over 400,000 to just 20,000. Despite these reductions, the permanent skilled migration program is set to remain at 185,000 places annually.
Increased Screening and Workforce Measures
To complement these changes, the Coalition plans to implement tougher screening processes for visa applicants and revise the temporary skilled priority list. A dedicated strike force will also be established to expedite the processing of skilled construction applications, addressing ongoing workforce shortages.
As these proposals unfold, travelers and potential migrants should stay informed about how these changes may affect their visa applications and travel plans to Australia.
