Christian representatives in Bangladesh have recently called on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to address the increasing challenges foreign missionaries face in obtaining and renewing their visas. This appeal was made during a meeting held on October 6, where a 25-member delegation presented their concerns.

Challenges Faced by Missionaries

Church leaders have reported that the process for acquiring new missionary visas and renewing existing ones has become significantly more difficult over the past decade. These restrictions are seen as detrimental to the various pastoral, educational, and social ministries that foreign missionaries provide in the predominantly Muslim country.

Delegation's Requests

The delegation, led by Bishop Subrato Boniface Gomes of the Archdiocese of Dhaka, included representatives from both Catholic and Protestant churches. In addition to easing visa restrictions, they also requested that Easter Sunday be officially recognized as a public holiday in Bangladesh.

Impact on the Christian Community

The challenges surrounding missionary visas have led to a decrease in the number of foreign priests and religious workers in Bangladesh. This decline poses a threat to the ongoing support and services that the Christian community relies on for various social and educational initiatives.

As discussions continue, the Christian leaders hope that their appeal will lead to positive changes that will allow foreign missionaries to contribute more effectively to their communities.
