Botswana is the third-best African country for remote workers in 2026 and the safest mainland option on the list, but it remains one of four featured countries with no dedicated digital nomad visa. Remote workers basing themselves there rely on standard visitor and work-permit routes instead.

The ranking, published on 21 October 2026, combines safety (35%), internet speed (25%), visa access (25%) and nomad-lifestyle scores (15%). The Nomad Lifestyle Index 2026 it draws on was published on 20 October 2026.

Key facts

  • Botswana ranks 3rd in Africa for remote workers, with no digital nomad visa.
  • It placed 44th worldwide on the Nomad Lifestyle Index 2026 with 49.99 points.
  • It ranks 50th on the 2026 Global Peace Index (1.823), Africa's third most peaceful country.
  • Six of the ten countries listed offer a purpose-built remote-work permit.
  • Four African countries — Seychelles, Mauritius, Cape Verde and Botswana — outranked the UK (47th), Canada (48th) and US (54th) in the Nomad Lifestyle Index 2026.

Where does Botswana stand?

Botswana placed 44th worldwide on the Nomad Lifestyle Index 2026 with 49.99 points, behind Seychelles in 12th (64.46), Mauritius in 17th (62.01) and Cape Verde in 36th (52.16). On the 2023 Global Remote Work Index it was the eighth-ranked African country with a score of 0.526.

Its strength is peacefulness: 50th in the world on the 2026 Global Peace Index with a score of 1.823. The constraint is immigration. Botswana has no dedicated digital nomad visa, which limits its score in the ranking, and remote workers use standard visitor and work-permit routes. For workers able to handle their own paperwork, Gaborone is described as one of the continent's most stable bases.

Which African countries have remote-work visas?

Mauritius runs a free, one-year renewable Premium Visa since October 2020, with an income bar of $1,500 a month for a single applicant. Seychelles covers stays of 30 days to a year under its Workation Retreat Program. Cape Verde grants six months, renewable for six more, requiring an average bank balance of 1,500 euros over the prior six months and a fee of about 20 euros; it is open to nationals of Europe, North America, the CPLP community and ECOWAS states.

South Africa's Remote Work Visa opened to applications in March 2025 and runs up to three years for foreign income from 650,976 rand a year. Namibia's Digital Nomad Visa, launched in 2025, runs six months, is not renewable in-country (holders may reapply after 12 months), needs income of $2,000 a month and costs $124. Kenya announced a Class N remote-work permit in 2024, described as one to two years, though some details are still unconfirmed against immigration sources.

Morocco, Botswana, Ghana and Egypt have no dedicated nomad visa. Egypt sells a five-year multiple-entry tourist visa for about $700, launched in June 2023, which long-stay remote workers use as a workaround.

What this means for travellers

Travellers planning to work remotely from Botswana should check standard visitor and work-permit routes before booking, as no purpose-built nomad permit exists. Those comparing destinations can weigh the visa options above: application rules, income thresholds and fees differ sharply between countries.

No new nomad visa for Botswana is mentioned as planned. Mauritius is rated the top African destination overall in this ranking, combining 18th place on the 2026 Global Peace Index with the fifth-fastest fixed internet in Africa.
