The 2026 Henley Passport Index places Seychelles first among African countries for international travel freedom, and among the 25 strongest passports globally. The ranking, which draws on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), measures how many destinations passport holders can enter without arranging a visa in advance.

Key facts

  • Top African passport: Seychelles, ranked among the world's 25 strongest in the July update
  • Access for Seychelles passport holders: visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 155 destinations at that time, as reported by the Seychelles News Agency
  • Full continental top five: Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia
  • Ranking source: the 2026 Henley Passport Index, based on IATA data

Which passports rank highest in Africa?

Seychelles takes first place on the continent. Its passport offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 155 destinations, according to the Seychelles News Agency, and the island nation sits among the 25 strongest passports worldwide in the July update. The index attributes the result to travel agreements Seychelles has concluded with countries around the world over the years.

Mauritius comes second. Its citizens can enter numerous destinations across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and beyond without a visa beforehand, and the country has held a consistently strong position in continental passport rankings.

Who follows Seychelles and Mauritius?

South Africa ranks third in the 2026 index. South African passport holders can enter a range of destinations without a prior visa, covering parts of Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean along with several African nations. Visas are still required for a number of major destinations, depending on the reason for the trip and how long the traveller intends to stay.

Botswana places fourth, giving its citizens entry to selected destinations within Africa and other regions without an advance visa requirement. Namibia completes the top five, with passport holders benefiting from visa-free and visa-on-arrival access to a number of countries, particularly within southern Africa and in select destinations elsewhere.

What this means for travellers

Travellers holding passports from these five countries can plan trips to a comparatively wide range of destinations without applying for a visa before departure. Before booking, check the entry rules for the specific destination and the length and purpose of the stay, since South African passport holders in particular still need visas for some major destinations.

The 2026 index does not give separate destination counts for Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana or Namibia, and no figures beyond the July update for Seychelles are provided.
