Kazakhstan has announced that its QazETA electronic travel authorization (ETA) will become mandatory for certain foreign nationals starting July 1, 2027. This decision was formalized in a government decree issued on October 10, 2026, which outlines a phased rollout of the new system.

Implementation Timeline

The QazETA system will be gradually introduced, beginning on November 1, 2026, at specific border crossings and airports. During this initial phase, travelers will not be denied entry for lacking an ETA; instead, they will be informed about the new requirement. The rollout schedule is as follows:

  • November 1, 2026: Implementation at Aktau International Airport and four road border crossings.
  • January 1, 2027: Expansion to Astana and Almaty international airports.
  • March 1, 2027: Extension to all remaining border crossings.
  • July 1, 2027: ETA requirement becomes mandatory for entry into Kazakhstan.

Who Needs an ETA?

The QazETA will primarily affect travelers from countries that currently enjoy visa-free entry to Kazakhstan, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, as well as citizens from several European nations, Japan, and South Korea. Certain other nationalities, including those from India, Iran, and Turkey, will also be required to obtain an ETA.

Application Process and Exemptions

The ETA will be free of charge and valid for 180 days. Travelers must apply at least 72 hours before their planned entry into Kazakhstan. Applications can be submitted through the QazETA mobile app, which facilitates the process of obtaining the authorization.

Exemptions from the ETA requirement include children under 16, seniors aged 65 and older, valid visa holders, and certain transit passengers. Additionally, diplomats and crew members may also be exempt, depending on their circumstances.

This new electronic travel authorization system aims to streamline entry procedures for travelers while ensuring compliance with Kazakhstan's immigration regulations. As the implementation date approaches, travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new requirements to ensure a smooth entry into the country.
