Kenya Introduces Mandatory Travel Health Insurance for Visitors
As of October 6, 2026, all travelers to Kenya must present proof of travel health insurance from a government-approved provider upon arrival.

Starting October 6, 2026, travelers heading to Kenya are required to obtain travel health insurance from a government-sanctioned provider before entering the country. Proof of this insurance must be presented at the time of arrival.
New Insurance Requirement
The implementation of this new rule means that travelers can no longer rely solely on private or employer-provided health insurance. Instead, they must secure the specified insurance, which is valid for one year and covers multiple trips during its validity period. The cost of this insurance is approximately USD 44.
Application Process
Travelers can obtain the required insurance through the updated Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) portal for eligible nationals, or via the eCitizen portal for those who do not qualify for the ETA. It is advisable for travelers to arrange this insurance prior to their journey to avoid any potential entry delays.
Impact on Travelers
This change does not affect the processing times for visa applications or other entry requirements. However, travelers should ensure they have the necessary documentation to prevent any issues upon arrival in Kenya.
This move aligns with a broader trend in East Africa, as neighboring Tanzania has also introduced a similar mandatory travel insurance requirement for visitors. Travelers planning to visit Kenya should stay informed about these regulations to ensure a smooth entry into the country.
