In a significant move, Pacific Justice Samoa is urging local citizens to support a petition aimed at reforming New Zealand's Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota schemes. The petition, spearheaded by Anae Arthur Anae, advocates for successful ballot applicants to be granted a six-month temporary working visa, enabling them to travel to New Zealand, secure employment, and fulfill the requirements of the scheme in person.

Details of the Petition

The proposed changes are designed to assist those who have been selected through the quota but have faced challenges in meeting existing requirements, which have led to declines in their applications. The temporary work visa would allow these individuals to enter New Zealand, find employment, and work towards longer-term residency.

Community Engagement

Memea Lyvia Black, a member of Pacific Justice Samoa, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the petition throughout the Samoan community. The organization has already explained the petition's objectives to local leaders and aims to ensure that residents understand its significance.

Current Support and Goals

As of now, the petition has garnered over 5,000 signatures, with a target of 100,000 signatures by January 31, 2027. Black stated that reaching this goal would demonstrate to the New Zealand Government the seriousness of the Pacific communities regarding the proposed changes.

The campaign is not just about current applicants but also seeks to pave the way for future generations, ensuring that Pacific workers have equitable opportunities to thrive in New Zealand.
