Tanzania Eases Visa Rules for Nigerian Travellers
Tanzania has updated its visa policy, allowing Nigerian citizens to follow the standard visa process without referral clearance. This change takes effect immediately and aligns Nigeria with several other countries benefiting from simplified entry requirements.

Tanzania has revised its visa regulations to simplify entry for travellers from various countries, including Nigeria. As of September 25, 2026, Nigerian citizens are no longer required to obtain a referral visa before entering Tanzania, allowing them to use the ordinary visa process.
What Changes Were Made?
The recent update categorizes countries into three groups: those eligible for visa-free access, those requiring ordinary visas, and those needing referral visas. With this change, Nigeria has been moved from the referral visa category to the standard visa process, which means Nigerian travellers can now apply for a visa without the additional clearance that was previously necessary.
Who Is Affected?
This adjustment primarily benefits Nigerian passport holders, who still need to obtain a visa to enter Tanzania, but can now do so without the extra step of referral approval. Other countries, such as the United States, Russia, and several European nations, are also included in the ordinary visa process.
Current Visa Requirements
Despite the easing of restrictions for Nigeria, travellers from certain countries, including Mali, Niger, and Iran, still face referral visa requirements. These individuals must obtain prior approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration before they can apply for a visa.
Additional Entry Rules
Starting October 1, 2026, all foreign visitors to Tanzania will be required to purchase mandatory travel insurance costing $44 per person. This new requirement aims to enhance the safety and security of visitors while in the country.
The changes in Tanzania's visa policy reflect a broader effort to streamline entry processes for international travellers, making it easier for visitors from Nigeria and other nations to explore the country.
