What was agreed on flights?
The two governments agreed to speed up the conclusion of an air services agreement to pave the way for direct flights between Bangkok and Dili. Government spokesman Ekkapob Pianpises said the proposed route is expected to make travel easier for tourists and businesspeople, boost tourism and create further opportunities for trade and investment.
The source does not state when the agreement might be signed, when flights could begin, which airlines might operate the route, or how often services would run.
What else did the two governments decide?
The spokesman said the two leaders welcomed progress in relations and agreed to advance cooperation in five key areas, following Timor-Leste's admission as a full member of ASEAN last year. They agreed to maintain regular high-level exchanges and hold joint activities to mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.
On trade, the sides agreed to facilitate exports of Thai agricultural products and processed food to Timor-Leste and to accelerate the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding on rice trade. They also agreed to strengthen military ties, with Thailand's Chief of Defence Forces expected to visit Timor-Leste soon, and to step up cooperation against online and transnational crime.
In development cooperation, Thailand has provided more than 800 scholarships and training opportunities to personnel from Timor-Leste since 2001. Both countries agreed to expedite implementation of a three-year development cooperation programme for 2026–2028, covering sustainable agriculture, community development, public health, human resource development and capacity-building related to ASEAN.
