Key facts
- Mail-in renewal is handled by the U.S. Embassy in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
- Applicants must use a valid Trinidad and Tobago mailing address
- Your last issued U.S. passport must still be in your possession
- Two categories are covered: adult passport renewal and replacement of a limited validity passport
- Full instructions and online payment options, where applicable, are published for each category
Who is eligible?
Three conditions apply to everyone using the mail-in service. You must use a valid Trinidad and Tobago mailing address, and you must still have your most recently issued U.S. passport in your possession. You must then fall into one of the two renewal categories below.
What are the two renewal categories?
Adult passport renewal. Your most recent passport was issued less than 15 years ago, your most recent U.S. passport book is valid for 10 years, and that book was issued in your current name. If your name has changed, you can instead submit a name change document such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order.
Replacing a limited validity passport. Your most recent passport was issued less than one year ago and you can submit it, undamaged, with your application.
What if you do not qualify?
The embassy says applicants who do not qualify for mail-in renewal should follow its guidance for renewals that require an appointment instead.
How do I get the instructions?
The embassy directs applicants to its pages for each category, which contain further information, online payment options where applicable and mail-in instructions. No fees or processing times are stated in the notice.
What this means for travellers
U.S. citizens in Trinidad and Tobago who meet the criteria can post their renewal rather than attend in person. Check the conditions above before applying, in particular the age of your current passport and whether you can supply your existing passport book, and confirm which category applies to you.
