What Indian Workers Need for a Bahrain Work Permit in 2026
Indian professionals need an employer-sponsored work permit from Bahrain's Labour Market Regulatory Authority to work in the kingdom. Permits run 1–2 years and require an attested degree, an employment contract and a medical report.

Indian nationals planning to work in Bahrain must hold a work permit issued by the kingdom's Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA). The permit is employer-sponsored, is usually valid for one to two years, and covers both residence and work authorisation in a single document.
Key facts
- Issuing body: Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), on the application of a licensed Bahraini employer
- Validity: typically 1–2 years, with renewal available
- LMRA application/service fee: approx. BHD 100–200 for a new work permit
- Passport validity required: at least 6 months
- Family sponsorship salary threshold: at least BHD 400 per month
- Personal income tax: none; 10% VAT applies to most consumer goods and services
What types of work permits are there?
Two main categories apply. The New Work Permit is the standard employer-sponsored permit for foreign nationals hired from abroad, or for a candidate re-hired after a previous permit was cancelled. It expects the qualifications needed for the role — engineers, teachers and doctors generally need formal degrees.
The Registered Worker Permit is for people already in Bahrain whose permit has expired or who must re-register with the LMRA. It is aimed mainly at labour-oriented roles, is based on previously issued permit records, and carries no major educational requirement. Fees for this route vary with the employer category and registration requirements.
Who is eligible and what documents are needed?
Applicants need a valid job offer from a verified, licensed employer in Bahrain; the employer submits the permit application through the LMRA. A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required for most professional roles, while diplomas or vocational certificates are accepted for skilled or technical trades. Degrees must be attested by India's Ministry of External Affairs and the Bahraini Embassy.
Two to three years of experience is preferred for most professional roles; oil and gas, healthcare and financial services may ask for three to five years. Documents listed include a completed application form, an original passport with at least six months' validity, recent passport-size photographs, a copy of the employment contract showing role, salary and duration, a medical report from an authorised clinic, a police clearance certificate from India and a medical fitness certificate from a Bahrain-approved medical centre.
No language certificate is generally required. English is the main working language for professional and corporate roles, and Arabic is described as an advantage for government-linked and client-facing work.
Can I change employers or bring my family?
Bahrain has abolished the Kafala sponsorship system. Workers can move to a new employer without a No-Objection Certificate from the current one, giving standard contractual notice instead; the new employer applies for the updated permit through the LMRA EMS portal.
Workers earning at least BHD 400 a month can sponsor a spouse and dependent children. Dependents receive residence status, children can attend Bahraini public schools, and a spouse needs a separate work permit to take up employment.
Since November 2023, end-of-service benefits run through a Social Insurance Organisation contribution model: the employer pays 4.2% of salary for the first three years and 8.4% afterwards, replacing the earlier lump-sum gratuity. The contribution is not deducted from the worker's salary.
What are the salary expectations?
Figures cited for annual average pay are BHD 36,000 in healthcare, BHD 29,000 in IT, BHD 28,000 in engineering, BHD 26,000 in banking and finance, BHD 23,000 in skilled trades, BHD 22,000 in marketing and sales and education, BHD 21,000 in nursing and BHD 20,000 in hospitality.
By experience level, the figures given are BHD 2,400–4,200 a year at entry level, BHD 4,800–9,600 mid-level and BHD 10,800–18,000+ for senior roles. The Bahraini dinar is cited at about ₹238.
What this means for travellers
Anyone heading to Bahrain for work should first confirm that the hiring company is registered with the LMRA and licensed to sponsor foreign workers, then get degrees attested before applying. Having the job offer letter, employment contract and details of housing and insurance in hand before accepting a role is advised.
No processing time for the LMRA work permit is given, and the total cost is only partly set out — the stated BHD 100–200 covers LMRA application or service fees. Expats already in Bahrain whose permit has lapsed fall under the separate re-registration route.
