AmCham Cyprus Advocates for Visa Waiver and Direct US Flights
AmCham Cyprus proposes a visa waiver and direct flights to the US to enhance economic ties. The recommendations aim to facilitate travel and investment between Cyprus and the United States.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Cyprus (AmCham Cyprus) has put forward a proposal to strengthen economic and strategic relations with the United States. The recommendations include the introduction of visa-free travel, a modernized tax treaty, and direct flights between the two nations.
Proposals for Strengthening Ties
In a recent policy paper titled “Strengthening Cyprus-United States Bilateral Relations,” AmCham Cyprus outlines five key measures aimed at enhancing investment, business connections, mobility, security, and cultural exchanges. The paper emphasizes the progress made in Cyprus-US relations and suggests that these initiatives would further solidify the partnership.
Visa Waiver Programme
One of the primary recommendations is Cyprus’ accession to the US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). AmCham Cyprus highlights that the country has a visa refusal rate of 2.16%, which is below the VWP threshold of 3%. The chamber notes that Cyprus has also improved its biometric passport capabilities and enhanced digital data-sharing for security purposes, meeting essential criteria for the VWP.
Benefits of Visa-Free Travel
The proposed visa waiver is expected to eliminate administrative hurdles for business, tourism, and academic exchanges, making Cyprus a more attractive destination for US investors. Furthermore, it aims to reinforce the perception of Cyprus as a secure and trustworthy partner in the region.
Modernizing the Tax Treaty
In addition to the visa waiver, AmCham Cyprus advocates for the modernization of the Cyprus-US Double Taxation Treaty, which has been in effect since 1986. The chamber argues that updating the treaty to align with contemporary tax standards would enhance tax certainty, reduce administrative burdens, and promote investment growth.
As these discussions progress, the potential for direct flights and a visa waiver could significantly enhance travel and economic interactions between Cyprus and the United States, benefiting both nations.
