Lufthansa has announced nonstop flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Franz Josef Strauss International Airport in Munich, starting 3 August 2027. The German airline said it is returning to Phoenix with the first-ever nonstop service between the two cities, giving travellers direct access to Bavaria and onward connections through the airline's Munich hub.

Key facts

  • Start date: 3 August 2027
  • Route: Phoenix Sky Harbor – Munich (Franz Josef Strauss International Airport)
  • Frequency: three flights a week, year-round, on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday
  • Aircraft: Airbus A350, 293 seats in three classes
  • Flight times: Munich departs 1:20 p.m., Phoenix arrives 4 p.m.; Phoenix departs 5:50 p.m., Munich arrives 1:25 p.m. the next day

What is the new service?

The route will be operated with an Airbus A350 in a three-class configuration: 48 Business seats, 21 Premium Economy seats and 224 Economy seats, for a total capacity of 293 passengers. Flights will run three times a week throughout the year on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

According to the airport, this is the first nonstop connection between Phoenix and Munich and marks Lufthansa's return to Phoenix.

What are the flight times?

Outbound flights will leave Munich at 1:20 p.m. and land in Phoenix at 4 p.m. The return leg departs Phoenix at 5:50 p.m. and reaches Munich at 1:25 p.m. the following day.

Where can travellers connect?

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport said the flight feeds into Lufthansa's hub in Munich, opening connections to cities across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, as well as travel with Star Alliance codeshare partners. Lufthansa Group Vice President of Passenger Sales, the Americas, Dirk Janzen, said the service gives business and leisure travellers a nonstop link to Germany and to the airline's wider network.

The airport noted that Lufthansa joins its existing international options, which include destinations in Canada and Mexico, plus London, Paris and Taipei. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said the new nonstop service benefits residents, businesses and the wider community.

What this means for travellers

Travellers from Arizona gain a direct option to Germany, while passengers from Germany can fly nonstop to Phoenix and connect onward through the Munich hub. Anyone considering the route should note that it does not begin until 3 August 2027 and that it operates only three days a week, so travel plans will need to fit the Tuesday, Friday and Sunday schedule.

The announcement also highlighted the route's economic impact: the airport said international flights contribute more than $3.4 billion each year to the local economy, and it expects the new three-times-weekly service to add $81.2 million in annual economic impact to the Phoenix community.
