Malaysia Student Visas for Myanmar Applicants Clear in as Little as Five Days
Malaysia is drawing Myanmar students as a study stepping stone, with student visas processed in as little as five days, while Germany and Ireland appeal to those struggling to prove funds, an education group says.

Students from Myanmar are increasingly choosing Malaysia, Germany and Ireland for study abroad, as changing visa requirements and difficulty showing proof of funds reshape where they can go, according to Benny Toolseram, regional director for Southeast Asia at Global Education Alliance (GEA).
Disruption to banking services and problems transferring money internationally make it hard for applicants to produce the extensive financial documentation some destinations demand, Toolseram said.
Key facts
- Malaysia: no student visa-on-arrival route; processing can take as little as five days with complete paperwork
- Around 800–900 Myanmar students are recruited to Malaysia each year, GEA estimates
- Thailand receives around 20,000 Myanmar students a year; ASEAN students can apply for a student visa "on the ground" with a decision within a week
- Germany and Ireland attract interest through less demanding financial requirements or a "blocked account" system
Why is Malaysia attracting Myanmar students?
Toolseram described Malaysia as a stepping stone for students who want to improve their English and prepare for further study overseas. GEA estimates it has helped recruit around 800–900 students from Myanmar to Malaysia annually, although he said Thailand attracts a larger number from the country.
What are Malaysia's student visa rules?
Malaysia does not offer students a visa-on-arrival route, Toolseram said. Student visa processing can take as little as five days, provided applicants have all the required paperwork ready.
How do Germany, Ireland and Thailand compare?
Germany and Ireland are drawing interest from Myanmar students because of less challenging financial requirements or access to a "blocked account" system, in which students can withdraw only a set amount each month to help them budget while abroad.
Thailand receives around 20,000 Myanmar students each year, with Toolseram attributing its appeal partly to its visa arrangements: ASEAN students can apply for a student visa "on the ground" and receive a decision within a week.
What else is affecting students leaving Myanmar?
Political instability is also shaping student mobility, Toolseram said, as authorities sometimes struggle to distinguish between people leaving for education and those travelling for employment. He said some students holding university offer letters were able to travel, while restrictions on certain categories of workers were more severe.
Toolseram also reported growing interest in overseas secondary education among students from Myanmar, with some leaving before the age of 18.
What this means for travellers
Myanmar students planning to study in Malaysia should have all required paperwork ready before applying, since there is no visa-on-arrival route for students. Those who struggle to show extensive financial documentation can consider destinations offering alternative ways to meet the requirements.
More broadly, Toolseram said the international education sector is changing rapidly, shaped by transnational education and market diversification. "Student numbers are dropping everywhere in the world," he said. No changes to Malaysia's visa rules have been announced.
