Ghana Proposes Visa Waiver with Luxembourg and Benelux Countries
Ghana is in talks with Luxembourg for a potential visa-waiver agreement that could ease travel for Ghanaians to Luxembourg and the Benelux region. Current visa requirements remain in place until an agreement is finalized.

Ghana has initiated discussions with Luxembourg regarding a potential visa-waiver arrangement aimed at facilitating easier travel for Ghanaian citizens to Luxembourg and the broader Benelux region, which includes Belgium and the Netherlands. These talks took place during a meeting at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Current Visa Requirements
As of now, Ghanaian passport holders are still required to obtain visas to enter Luxembourg, Belgium, or the Netherlands. The proposed agreement is part of Ghana's broader strategy to enhance visa-free travel and improve passport mobility for its citizens.
Recent Developments in Visa Agreements
Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been actively working to expand visa-free travel options. In 2025, Ghana secured 11 new visa-waiver agreements, and in 2026, it advanced arrangements with various countries, including the Maldives, Zambia, and South Korea.
Future Prospects
If the negotiations with Luxembourg lead to a successful visa-waiver agreement, it could significantly ease travel for Ghanaians to the Benelux countries. Currently, visa applications for short stays in Luxembourg are managed through the Netherlands' embassy in Accra, while long-stay visas are processed by Belgium's embassy in Abidjan.
Until an agreement is reached, Ghanaian travelers should continue to adhere to the existing visa requirements when planning trips to Luxembourg, Belgium, or the Netherlands. The proposed visa waiver represents a potential shift in travel dynamics between Ghana and these European nations.
