Macau's City of Dreams opens red-hued REM hotel with 149 rooms and suites
REM, Melco Resorts & Entertainment's newest hotel, opened at City of Dreams Macau with a grand opening on 20 October 2026. The 149-room property replaces the former Countdown Hotel and is billed as the resort's most exclusive address.

City of Dreams in Macau has a new ultra-luxury address: REM, a hotel by Melco Resorts & Entertainment, opened this week and held its grand opening on 20 October 2026. The property completes a trio of high-end hotels at the Cotai resort and takes over the building that previously housed the Countdown Hotel, and the Hard Rock Hotel before that.

What is the hotel like?
REM stands for rapid eye movement, the phase of sleep in which people have the most vivid dreams, according to Lawrence Ho Yau-lung, chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts & Entertainment. Speaking at the opening, he said that is "the vibe we are going after".
Much of the property is fluorescent red, from the nightclub-like entrance and lobby to the rooms and suites, in order to create a surreal sense of dreaminess and fantasy. The hotel is not positioned as a sleep-focused property that promotes better slumber; instead, it aims to provide a private, intimate setting for guests to relax in.
What rooms can you book?
Room types carry dream-themed names: the Twilight Suite, Luminous Suite, Euphoria Suite, Hypnotic Suite, The Haven and The Lair. The Lair is a 12,900 square foot (1,200 square metre) penthouse suite on the 30th floor.
The Haven is a 3,000 square foot villa-type suite with a hammock-like swing sofa in the main living area and a rotating king-size bed that turns to face floor-to-ceiling windows. The bed completes two full 360-degree rotations and then stops automatically, so it does not keep turning overnight. Its minibar is concealed behind a half-revolving circular door.
The hotel is described as suitable for families, though some decor suggests a more adult target audience: in The Haven, for example, a large digital screen shows a young female model in leatherwear moving slowly through poses.
How does it compare with the other City of Dreams hotels?
REM sits alongside the Zaha Hadid-designed Morpheus and the Asian-inspired Nuwa, and positions itself as the most exclusive of the three. Room availability will be tighter than at its sister hotels: Nuwa has around 300 guest rooms and suites, and Morpheus has 772, compared with REM's 149.
What this means for travellers
Travellers considering REM should expect limited room inventory compared with the larger City of Dreams properties, so early enquiries are likely to matter. Guests should also note that some room styling is aimed at a more mature audience, even though the hotel welcomes families.
The City of Dreams complex, developed by the joint venture Melco Crown Entertainment and opened in June 2009, also houses Grand Hyatt Macau and the live show House of Dancing Water, which returned in 2025 with an updated version after a five-year hiatus.
