UK warns Eritreans face full visa suspension over return cooperation

British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood threatened on 15 October 2026 to suspend all visas for Eritrean nationals unless Asmara resumes cooperation on returning its citizens without UK residency rights. Some restrictions on Eritrean officials and diplomats already apply.

British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood warned on 15 October 2026 that the United Kingdom could suspend all visas for Eritrean nationals. The threat is conditional: it depends on whether Asmara resumes cooperation on the return of Eritrean citizens who have no residency rights in the UK.

Some measures are already in force, while the wider ban has not yet been introduced and remains contingent on Eritrea's response.

Key facts

  • Announced: 15 October 2026, by British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood
  • Proposed measure: suspension of all UK visas for Eritrean nationals — still only a threat
  • Already in place: no expedited visa processing for Eritrean officials and prominent figures
  • Already in place: Eritrean diplomats need Foreign Office permission to travel more than 60 kilometres from London
  • Condition set by London: Asmara must resume cooperation on returning its citizens without UK residency rights

What has changed for Eritrean travellers so far?

Eritrean officials and personalities have lost access to expedited visa processing for the UK, the Home Office indicated. Diplomats from the country must also obtain permission from the Foreign Office before travelling more than 60 kilometres from London.

A full suspension of UK visas for all Eritrean nationals has not been imposed. At this stage it remains a threat that depends on how Asmara responds.

Why is the UK taking this step?

The Home Office accuses the Eritrean authorities of halting their cooperation this year, after several months of British efforts. Mahmood said she would "not hesitate to impose further measures on countries that refuse to cooperate."

Home Office figures cited from House of Commons library data show Eritreans accounted for 18% of arrivals by small boats in the twelve months to June 2026, the largest nationality recorded on that route.

Could Eritreans in the UK actually be returned?

Scope for removals is limited by asylum decisions, according to Madeleine Sumption, director of the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, speaking to BBC Radio 4. She noted that 84% of Eritrean applications receive a favourable decision at first review, meaning most of those applicants cannot be deported, while others secure protection on appeal.

Has this been done before?

Similar visa pressure has been applied to Angola, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to the British ministry, the restrictions imposed on the DRC were lifted after six months of cooperation and the resumption of return flights.

What this means for travellers

Eritrean nationals applying for UK visas should note that expedited processing is no longer available to officials and prominent figures, and that Eritrean diplomats now need Foreign Office permission to travel beyond 60 kilometres from London. Anyone from Eritrea planning UK travel should watch for an announcement on whether the threatened full visa suspension is introduced.

No date has been set for a decision on a wider visa ban, and the outcome depends on whether Asmara resumes cooperation on returns.
