Flag of TurkmenistanVisa & Entry Requirements for Turkmenistan

Most travellers need a visa for Turkmenistan: 197 of 198 passports must apply at an embassy or consulate.

Turkmenistan's State Migration Service says foreign citizens may enter and stay on the basis of a visa unless an international treaty of Turkmenistan provides otherwise. The UK Foreign Office says that on 1 October 2026 Turkmenistan introduced an e-visa for tourists and for people attending international conferences and exhibitions backed by its government: you cannot apply directly, your tour agency or event organiser acts as sponsor, and the e-visa replaces the letter of invitation followed by a visa in your passport. For any other purpose, it says, you still need a letter of invitation from a sponsoring organisation, and with it you apply at an Embassy of Turkmenistan or on arrival.

Flag of TurkmenistanFrequently asked questions about Turkmenistan visas

Do I need a visa for Turkmenistan?

Turkmenistan's State Migration Service says foreign citizens enter on the basis of a visa unless an international treaty of Turkmenistan provides otherwise. The UK Foreign Office says that on 1 October 2026 Turkmenistan introduced an e-visa for tourists and for people attending international conferences and exhibitions backed by its government; you cannot apply for it directly, your tour agency or event organiser acts as sponsor, and the e-visa can be printed off or presented electronically on arrival.

How do I get a Turkmenistan letter of invitation?

Canada's travel advice says the letter comes from the person you will visit, the company you will work for or an authorised travel agency in Turkmenistan, which must submit a request to the State Migration Service. The UK government says that for tourists and conference visitors the e-visa introduced on 1 October 2026 replaces the letter of invitation followed by a visa in your passport; for any other purpose you still need a letter of invitation applied for on your behalf by a sponsoring organisation, and with it you can apply at your nearest Embassy of Turkmenistan, where the decision is referred to Ashgabat and can take up to a month unless a paid-for express service is available, or on arrival.

Can I get a Turkmenistan visa on arrival?

Yes, with a letter of invitation, for visits for any purpose other than tourism or conference participation: the UK government says that once you have the letter you can apply for your visa on arrival, and that visas on arrival attract an additional fee of 50 US dollars. The State Migration Service charges a further USD 50 on top of the fee for a visa obtained at the international airport. For tourists and conference visitors, the UK government says the e-visa obtained through your sponsor can be printed off or presented electronically on arrival.

Is there a Turkmenistan transit visa without an invitation letter?

No. The State Migration Service lists the transit visa for up to 5 days per trip. The UK government says you may be eligible for one if you will travel overland through Turkmenistan for fewer than 5 days and the purpose of your stay is transit rather than tourism; that the State Migration Service is the sole sponsor of transit visas; that you must secure the letter of invitation before you travel, which can take up to a month to issue, and it can then be converted to a transit visa at the land border checkpoint; that you must enter and leave through the border crossings specified in the letter of invitation; and that you cannot buy a transit visa at Baku seaport.

Can I travel independently in Turkmenistan?

No official source we could read states whether tourists must be accompanied by a guide. Canada's travel advice says the areas bordering Iran, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, including the city of Dashoguz and areas of the Caspian coast, are restricted zones that need permission from the Government of Turkmenistan, applied for at least 10 working days ahead. The UK government says transit-visa holders must enter and leave through the border crossings specified in the letter of invitation.
