South African Passport Ranking Drops, Travel Options Remain

Recent updates indicate that South Africa's passport has dropped from 79th to 86th place in the latest Passport Reports ranking. Despite this decline, South African travelers still have access to 108 destinations with varying entry requirements.

Current Visa-Free Access

According to the October update, South Africans can travel to 59 destinations without needing a visa, while 42 countries offer visas on arrival. Additionally, seven destinations require an electronic travel authorization (ETA). Notably, Eswatini is among the nearby countries that South Africans can visit without a visa.

• In Southern Africa, travelers can easily visit Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
• Further afield, countries like Argentina, Brazil, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand are accessible, although some may require arrival cards or other online formalities.
• The Caribbean also offers generous options, including Barbados, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and St Lucia.

Understanding the Mobility Score

The Mobility Score, which reflects the ease of travel based on visa-free access, visas on arrival, and ETAs, has decreased from 110 to 108. This score can vary across different passport ranking systems, with some placing South Africa higher based on different criteria.
