Firefly Cancels Flights to Singapore Due to Haze from Indonesia

Firefly, a low-cost airline in Malaysia, has announced the cancellation of its flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore until Wednesday due to hazardous haze conditions resulting from fires in Indonesia. This decision comes as air quality in both cities has deteriorated significantly, with Singapore and Kuala Lumpur being ranked as the world's most polluted cities.

Flight Cancellations

The airline stated that the cancellations are a proactive safety measure in response to low visibility caused by the haze. Flights were initially suspended on October 10, and the situation has prompted Firefly to extend this suspension. Passengers affected by these cancellations are being rebooked on Malaysia Airlines flights, subject to seat availability.

Impact of Haze

The haze is primarily attributed to fires on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo, which have intensified due to the El Nino weather pattern. The air quality index (AQI) in Singapore reached 199, while Kuala Lumpur recorded an AQI of 183, both indicating unhealthy air quality levels.

Regional Response

In light of the worsening haze, the Singapore government has reintroduced subsidized healthcare for haze-related illnesses, a measure last implemented during a similar crisis in 2015. Meanwhile, schools in Malaysia have reopened in most states, although some remain closed due to ongoing poor air quality.

As the situation develops, travelers planning to fly between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore should stay informed about flight statuses and consider alternative arrangements if necessary.
