Clinical trials for a candidate vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus have commenced in Uganda. This initiative is part of efforts to address the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has seen a significant rise in cases and fatalities.

Details of the Trials

The Phase Ib trials of the ChAdOx1 vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford, began on October 6. This follows earlier Phase Ia trials conducted in the UK, which started in July. Another candidate vaccine from Moderna has also received ethical approval to begin trials in Uganda, following its initial trials in Canada.

Current Outbreak Statistics

As of the latest updates, the Democratic Republic of Congo has reported 8,728 confirmed cases of Ebola, with 4,205 fatalities. This outbreak, declared in May, has affected several provinces, particularly in the northern and eastern regions of the country, which are adjacent to Uganda and other neighboring states.

Vaccine Availability and Development

Currently, there is no approved vaccine specifically for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. However, the global stockpile has allocated 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, which is effective against the Zaire Ebola virus, to the DR Congo. Over 7,700 healthcare workers have been vaccinated as part of the response efforts. Additionally, a partnership has been announced to develop a vaccine specifically for the Bundibugyo strain.

As the situation develops, travelers to and from the region are advised to stay informed about health advisories and potential travel restrictions related to the Ebola outbreak.
