Why these countries are so cold

Greenland, Canada, Russia, Mongolia, Iceland and Norway average below 3 °C over the year — long winters, permafrost or high altitude keep the average low even when summers are warm.

Europe

In Europe the warmest country is Malta and the coldest Russia (top of this list).

About the data

Average yearly temperatures are long-term country averages (all regions, day and night, all seasons). Large countries mix very different climates — Russia's average hides both Siberian winters and mild Black Sea summers.
